Rowan Kay – Primal Physiotherapy

Introducing Rowan:

Hi my name’s Rowan, I qualified as a Physiotherapist in 2020 from Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh, Scotland. I also have a postgraduate certificate in strength and conditioning from St Mary’s University Twickenham. I’m originally from England but lived in Scotland for 26 years before moving to Melbourne with my wife.

I love to travel and enjoy country walks wherever I am. I also enjoy sports and have been known to play football (soccer) recreationally. I’m a massive movie fan and like trips to the cinema or watching the classics at home. I have a broad taste in music and enjoy going to live events whenever possible. My real passion is the gym and I’ve trained in the gym since I was old enough to have a membership. I previously worked as a personal trainer and fitness coach for many years and this is where I developed my interest in rehabilitation and sports injuries.

I have always had an interest in the human body and how it moves and responds to exercise. This interest led me to study a variety of disciplines to better understand rehabilitation and athletic performance. As well as sport and medical science I have also studied Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi.

Becoming a physiotherapist is my biggest professional achievement as it has allowed me to combine my academic interests with helping people recover from injury and become pain free. My previous role was working for the National Health Service in the UK. During this time, I worked in the community visiting people in their homes and assisting with their discharge from hospital. I was able to provide vital support to clients and their families at difficult times. Many of my clients were elderly and at risk of not coping at home. With appropriate interventions and a holistic approach, many of my clients were able to continue to live independently.

Empowering people gives me great satisfaction and is the reason I became a physiotherapist. An important part of my role is to help people recover from injury but I also believe in helping them to become more resilient. I believe that full recovery includes taking steps to improve movement efficiency, strength and optimising performance. I believe everybody can improve their health and life through physical activity.
I have a special interest in athletic performance and have recently completed a postgraduate certificate in strength and conditioning. During my studies I worked with rowing athletes at the University of Edinburgh. Working with athletes was a great experience and I have huge respect for the dedication it takes to compete as an athlete. I believe knowledge of strength and conditioning benefits physiotherapists as it enhances practice and enables rehabilitation specialists to take a more proactive and preventative approach.
My goal is to help clients to reduce their pain and recover in the quickest time possible. I understand that many people can be anxious when seeing a physiotherapist and I will do my best to help you feel comfortable and relaxed. I have a variety of experience from working with athletes to working with elderly clients in the community. I treat everyone as an individual and use a collaborative approach to ensure you get the best results. I believe in a holistic approach and I am passionate about providing the best possible care for my clients.
